Abstract

In recent years, introduction of self-healing coatings based on microcapsules containing healing agent
and green corrosion inhibitor opened a new chapter in the manufacture of organic polymer coatings. In
this regard microcapsules based on poly (melamine-formaldehyde) get noticed. In this work, melamineformaldehyde
microcapsules containing air-dried alkyd resin with cerium nitrate as a corrosion inhibitor
are synthesized by in situ polymerization. Then synthesized microcapsules were used into epoxy
resin. Anti-corrosion properties and self-repairing of coating were investigated. Scanning electron microscope,
differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy were used to survey. Finally, by selecting a microcapsule, which
was synthesized by agitation rate of 800 rpm, and using polyvinyl pyrrolidone as a colloidal stabilizer,
in 7.5% by weight with epoxy coating was applied. The results show a better corrosion resistance from
1.44×103 (Ω/cm2) to 2.83×108 (Ω/cm2) and self-repairing coating.
