Abstract

In this study, the rosin compound was modified with maleic anhydride and glycerin. In the first step, a three-functional acid was formed via chemical reactions between rosin (as a diene) and maleic anhydride (as a dienophile) under Diels-Alder maechanisms. In the second step, synthesized was esterificated with glycerin (alcohol). The prepared rosin ester was then characterized using; acid value measurement during the process, softening point measurement, and DMTA analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. Subsequently, thermoplastic road marking samples were prepared using synthesized rosin ester and a commercially available alkyd-based resin according to a defined recipe. Softening point measurements, luminance factor, color coordinates, and heat resistance of prepared sample were evaluated.
The characterization tests results of synthesized rosin ester and various studies have been conducted on prepared thermoplastic road marking, showed appropriate properties and their potential utilization in thermoplastic road markings.
