Abstract

A homogeneous and compact nano-composite coating of Ni+RuO2 on Ni substrate was obtained by electrochemical co-deposition technique. The coating was proved to be a suitable electrocatayst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media especially for membrane cell chlor-alkali process and/or water electrolysis. According to the linear sweep voltametry (LSV) results, the presence of RuO2 particles in the coating resulted in a significant decrease in Tafel slope (up to 34 mV/decade) and an increase in exchange current density (up to 0.035 mA/cm2) toward HER compared with those of a bare Ni. The activity of the cathode coating did not decrease with time unlike that of the bare Ni according to the cyclic voltamograms (CV) obtained results. The study of the electrochemical stability of the coating by chronopotentiometry confirmed the proper stability of the Ni+RuO2 coating in alkaline media. The average coating thickness was 8.4 µm based on light metallography results.
