Abstract
In this study, Fe203 nanoparticles were modified using 3-amino propyl trimethoxy silane (APTMS) in order to achieve a proper dispersion of the nanoparticles in a polyurethane-based coating. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and turbidimetery were utilized in order to investigate the grafting reactions of APTMS molecules on the surface of the nanoparticles. Polyurethane nanocomposites were prepared by adding of various amounts of treated and untreated Fe2O3 nanoparticles into the matrix. The nanoparticles dispersion in the coating matrix was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Tensile test was utilized in order to investigate the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the nanocomposites, respectively. Results obtained from FTIR and turbidimetery showed that the organic functional groups of the silane were successfully grafted on the surface of  the nanoparticles. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the polyurethane coating were enhanced in the presence of surface modified Fe2O3 nanoparticles.
